What is category management in retail?

Category managers decide what goes on the shelf, so a supplier or own-brand owner needs to think the way they do.

Definition

Category management

Category management is a retail practice in which each product category is managed as a separate business unit, with its own role, targets, range, pricing, promotion and shelf space. Decisions are based on shopper and sales data, and are often made jointly with key suppliers who understand the category.

How category management affects your brand

A retailer gives each category a role, such as a destination category that brings shoppers in, a routine category bought every week, or a convenience category picked up on the way. The role sets how much space, promotion and price investment the category gets. Category managers then decide which brands and SKUs fill it.

For a supplier, this means a listing is a business case for the category, not for your product. Buyers want to know what your item adds that the shelf lacks, how it affects sales of neighbouring products, what margin it leaves the retailer and how you will support it. A product that only takes sales from an existing line rarely gets space. Bring evidence the buyer can check: sales rates from another channel, a price comparison with the current shelf, and a realistic plan for promotions during the first months.

For a retailer building its own brand, category management is where the own-brand decision starts: which categories have weak brand loyalty, high prices or gaps in the range. These are usually the first candidates for an own brand. Categories where shoppers insist on a specific brand are harder. Look at promotions and own-label share as well.

Frequently asked questions

What does a category manager do?

A category manager runs one product category for a retailer: choosing the range, setting prices and promotions, allocating shelf space and negotiating with suppliers, with targets for sales and margin.

What is a category captain?

A category captain is a supplier that a retailer asks to help analyse and plan a category. The retailer keeps the final decisions.
