What is an own brand (store brand)? Meaning in retail
Retailers and distributors build own brands to control margin, range and supply instead of reselling someone else’s brand.
Definition
Own brand / store brandAn own brand, also called a store brand or retailer brand, is a brand owned by a retailer, wholesaler or distributor rather than by a manufacturer. The products are usually made by contract manufacturers under private label agreements. The owner decides the range, price and packaging and is responsible for the products on the market.
How an own brand works for retailers and distributors
For a chain, an own brand starts with the category data it already has: which branded products sell, at what price, and where shoppers trade down or ask for something missing. The retailer then specifies equivalent or better products, sources them from contract manufacturers and places them next to the leading brands on its own shelves.
Many retailers run more than one own brand at once, often in a good-better-best structure: an entry line that protects price perception, a standard line that copies the category leader, and a premium line that earns margin and loyalty. Distributors use the same idea to stop competing on the price of brands they do not control.
The common mistake is treating an own brand as a sticker on cheaper goods. Shoppers compare it with the brand next to it on the shelf, so quality gaps show up in returns and reviews. Another is building too many SKUs at once, which ties cash into slow stock and makes the minimum order quantities of each factory hard to meet. Own brands also need someone who owns the range after launch, because cost, quality and shelf data have to be reviewed for every reorder.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between own brand and private label?
Own brand describes who owns the brand: a retailer or distributor. Private label describes how the goods are made: by a third-party manufacturer for that brand. Most own brands are produced through private label agreements.
Do own brand products have to be cheaper than brands?
No. Entry lines are usually cheaper, but many retailers also run premium own brands priced at or above the leading brands. Price should follow positioning and the quality you can prove.
