Private label home and kitchen products

In home and kitchen, differentiation often lives in tooling, and tooling is paid for once. Before you pay, make sure you own it, and that the product survives the journey to the customer.

Private label home and kitchen products that are worth owning

Private label home and kitchen products are cookware, storage, tableware and household items made by a contract factory under your brand. Entry looks easy because catalogues are full of ready products. That is also the problem: the same bottle or organiser is on sale from dozens of sellers, so without a change that customers notice, you compete only on price.

There are two serious questions. First, does anything touch food? If so, the material has its own safety regime and documents, and your supplier must be able to provide them. Second, what makes it yours? A new mould costs money up front but gives a real difference, while colour and packaging alone rarely hold for long. We compare both options with real figures in the assortment stage.

Written as general guidance, not legal advice: your product’s specific food-contact file gets reviewed with a specialist and an accredited laboratory during the project.

Range options

Compare the cost of being different with the margin it brings.

Food-contact items

Bottles, cups, kitchen tools, tableware. Material testing and a declaration are the core of the file. Coatings, silicone and bamboo blends deserve close questions.

Tooled designs

A custom mould gives a real barrier. State in the contract that you own it, where it is stored, and how it can be moved.

What drives the minimum

Tooling, resin colour minimum, printed gift box. Using a neutral mailer rather than a printed retail box can cut the entry order.

Rules for food-contact and general home goods

Food contact is the part most often missed on a catalogue product.

Check whether the chemical claims you make, such as BPA-free, are supported by test reports on your final material.

Before launch

This list assumes you plan to sell online, where damage and returns are the first complaints.

  • Food-contact declaration and test reports matching the exact material and colour
  • Technical file with risk analysis for each product
  • Mould ownership and storage in writing, including the right to move it
  • Drop-test or transit test of the packed product in the real shipping format
  • Packaging compliance and EPR registration in each country of sale
  • Trademark search, plus design protection if the form is the differentiator

Frequently asked questions

Do kitchen products need testing before sale?

Products that touch food do. In the EU they fall under the food contact rules and need supporting documents, and the US and Japan have their own regimes. Ask for test reports that match your exact material, colour and supplier.

Can I sell a catalogue kitchen product under my brand?

Yes, as white label, but the responsibility moves to you. In the EU, putting your own name on a product generally makes you the manufacturer for safety purposes. Differences in design or bundle are also what protects the margin.

Who owns the mould if I pay for tooling?

Only the party the contract names. Many disputes come from an unwritten assumption. State your ownership, storage location, maintenance and the right to remove it. Paying for a mould without this clause leaves the factory in control.

What minimum order should I expect?

For ready products, close to our general working figure of 300–1 000 units per item. Custom moulds and colours usually require more, and the tool itself is a separate cost. Compare this against the margin calculator before deciding.
