What is sell-in? Meaning in retail and distribution
Sell-in measures how much stock you shipped to a trade partner, not how much shoppers bought.
Definition
Sell-inSell-in is the volume or value of products that a brand or manufacturer sells to its trade customers, such as retailers, wholesalers or distributors. It is recorded when goods are shipped or invoiced to the partner, before any sale to end consumers, so it shows how much stock the channel has taken on rather than actual consumer demand.
Why sell-in can mislead a new brand
For a brand selling through retail, sell-in is what shows up in its own invoices. A large first order from a chain looks like success, and in cash terms it often is. But the goods are now on the retailer’s shelves and in its warehouse. If shoppers do not buy them, the next order is small or never comes, and the retailer may ask for markdown support or return the goods if the contract allows. Treat that first order as a trial the shoppers have yet to vote on.
That is why buyers and brand owners track sell-in together with sell-through, the share of stock that shoppers actually buy. A healthy pattern is a moderate first order followed by steady reorders as sell-through confirms demand. Brands that push maximum stock into a channel to hit a launch target often pay for it later through returns, markdowns and a buyer who no longer trusts their forecasts.
Watch the terms behind the sell-in figure. Listing fees, promotional contributions, payment terms and return rights can make a large initial order much less profitable than it looks. Agree how slow sellers will be handled before you ship, and plan the launch budget for in-store or online support that moves stock to shoppers.

Frequently asked questions
Is sell-in the same as revenue?
For the brand, sell-in usually is its revenue from trade customers, before deductions such as rebates, promotional allowances and returns. It is not the same as consumer sales.
Why do retailers care about sell-through more than sell-in?
Because unsold stock on their shelves costs them space and cash. A product with high sell-in and low sell-through will be reordered less or delisted.
