Own brands for distributors and wholesalers

You know the buyers and the margins, and you run the logistics. What you do not control is what your principals decide next. An own brand changes that, at a price.

Creating an own brand as a distributor or wholesaler

A distributor’s own brand is a product line you own, source and sell through your existing customers, instead of depending only on principals’ brands. It protects you when a principal changes terms, goes direct or moves to a competitor, and it can raise your margin. It works best in categories where you already know which products sell, and why.

The advantage you start with is real: a sales team, customer accounts, warehouse and market data. Few new brands have these. The hard part is mainly political. Your largest principal may view your new brand as competition and react. So the decision is partly about which categories to enter and how to present the brand before anyone starts on design.

A distributor also changes role legally. When you import and sell under your own name, you take on duties you previously left with the brand owner. Read more on compliance and trademark.

Where distributor brands run into trouble

Conflict with principals

A distribution agreement may contain non-compete or exclusivity clauses. Have them read before you start.

Sales team indifference

Reps sell what is easy and rewarded. Without a commission plan, a new brand stays in the catalogue.

Trade buyers want proof

Your customers ask why they should stock an unknown brand. A low price alone is not the answer.

What we prepare with you

  • Category choice based on your sales data and contract restrictions, reviewed with your lawyer
  • Business case in your terms: margin, working capital and warehouse space
  • Brand name, identity and a trade-friendly range
  • Factory selection, with your own purchasing and logistics where they are strong
  • Compliance file and importer duties mapped for each market
  • Sell-in kit for your reps, including the answer to “why stock this?”

How a distributor project usually runs

  1. 1

    Contract and category check

Which categories are free of conflict with current principals.

  2. 2

    Numbers

Own brand against current margin, including sales incentive and stock risk.

  3. 3

    Brand and range

Short range that fills a real gap in your portfolio.

  4. 4

    Pilot with selected customers

A few friendly accounts give feedback before the wider rollout.

  5. 5

    Extension

New products or new countries follow only after sell-out evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can a distributor create its own brand?

Yes, if existing contracts allow it. Check non-compete and exclusivity clauses first, then choose categories that do not put your largest income at risk. Your existing customers and logistics give you a head start.

Will an own brand damage my relations with principals?

It might. Risk is lower when the new brand fills a gap the principal does not serve. Some distributors tell principals openly, and others choose a separate category altogether. Decide this before any design work begins.

How do I persuade my sales team to sell it?

Give the team a reason: a commission that recognises a harder sale, strong sell-in materials and a product with a clear difference. If reps see only one more line in the catalogue, sell-out is likely to disappoint.

Can I sell my own brand in other countries?

Yes, but each country brings its own rules and possibly new distributors. Choose a name that can travel, check market requirements and file trademarks before you enter.
