Private label pet food and pet supplies

Pet food and pet accessories are two different businesses. One is regulated feed with nutrition claims, the other is mostly sourcing and design. Choose knowingly.

Private label pet food and supplies: choose your half of the category

Private label pet products split into consumables, such as food and treats, and durable goods, such as beds, leads and toys. Consumables build repeat purchase, but they bring feed regulation, certified producers and shelf-life risk. Accessories need less paperwork and lower recurring demand, so the brand has to earn each sale again.

Most newcomers do well with a narrow range: a few accessories with a real design difference, or one treat line from a registered feed producer. Full complete-food ranges demand nutritional expertise and scale that a first project seldom has. We help decide this in assortment planning, with margin per channel shown for each SKU, and make products through selected contract manufacturers.

The rules here are summarised for orientation only. For feed in particular, your label and nutrition claims need review by a specialist during the project.

Where a range can start

The further from nutrition claims, the simpler the file.

Treats and chews

A workable entry to consumables, with repeat purchase and a smaller range than complete food. Check drying, animal-origin ingredient rules and packaging.

Complete food

High repeat value, but requires a nutritional basis and strong producer. Rarely a small first project.

Functional and vet channels

Joint or calming products must not stray into veterinary medicine. In Japan and elsewhere, claims can reclassify a feed as a veterinary drug.

What drives the minimum

For food, the production run and printed bags. For accessories, colourways, materials and custom hardware.

Pet food rules by market

Accessories mostly fall under general product safety. Food has its own framework.

Before launch

For food, all of this comes before the design file is approved. For accessories, the list is shorter.

  • Decision on food versus accessories, with margin per channel on each
  • Producer’s registration or approval, confirmed from the official source where possible
  • Recipe, analytical constituents and feeding guide reviewed for your market’s label rules
  • Safety review for accessories: small parts, materials and any electronic component
  • Importer and EPR packaging roles assigned
  • Trademark filing in the classes for feed and for accessories, which differ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence to sell private label pet food?

You need a producer with the right approval or registration, and your own role may also require registration. In the EU this comes from the feed hygiene regulation. In the US, FDA does not pre-approve most animal foods but requires facility registration and truthful labels.

Can I claim that a treat helps joints or anxiety?

Carefully. A claim that treats or prevents disease can make a feed into a veterinary medicine in many markets. Ask a specialist to review the wording, and make sure each claim has evidence behind it.

What is the easiest way into the pet market?

Often a small accessories line sold online, because compliance is simpler and shelf life is not an issue. Ask whether you can offer a real design difference. If not, the listing will compete on price with near-identical products.

Should an online seller add pet products?

Only if the unit economics survive returns and bulky-item fees. Sellers should model this before ordering stock, using current marketplace fee tables and the calculator.
