ODM (original design manufacturer): meaning and when to use it

ODM lets you start from a design the factory already makes, which cuts time and cost and limits how different your product can be.

Definition

ODM

ODM, short for original design manufacturer, is a production arrangement in which a factory supplies a product it has designed itself, adapted and branded for the buyer. The buyer chooses options such as colour, materials, features or packaging, while the core design usually remains the factory’s intellectual property.

How ODM works and what to watch

ODM factories show a range of base models in a catalogue or at trade fairs. You pick one, request changes within the factory’s options and order with your branding. Because the product already exists and has been produced before, sampling is quicker and there is often test data you can review for your market. Ask to see the current production version, not only the showroom piece.

The trade-off is control. Other brands can order the same base model, so your product may appear elsewhere with a different logo. Ask what can be changed beyond colour and print: a different material, a function the base model lacks, a new accessory or a redesigned housing. Each real change narrows the overlap and may also move the project closer to OEM.

Read test reports carefully. A report issued for the factory’s base model may not cover your modified version, and it may have been made for a different market. Check that the standard, the model number and the date match what you will actually sell, and plan new tests where they do not. The compliance stage is where this is sorted out before production.

Small electronics, kitchen tools, bags and fitness accessories are common ODM categories. The OEM and ODM page and the guide how to choose a manufacturer show how to compare offers.

Frequently asked questions

Is ODM the same as white label?

They are close. White label usually means a finished item with only the brand changed. ODM usually allows modifications to a factory design, such as materials, features or packaging, before your branding goes on.

Can I get exclusivity on an ODM product?

Sometimes, for a region, channel or period, usually in exchange for volume commitments. Get it in writing and define exactly which model and changes it covers.
