What is contract manufacturing? Meaning for brand owners
Contract manufacturing is how most product brands exist without owning a factory.
Definition
Contract manufacturingContract manufacturing is an arrangement in which a company hires another company to produce goods on its behalf, under an agreement that sets the specification, quality, price, volumes and delivery terms. The hiring company usually owns the brand and sells the products, while the contract manufacturer provides facilities, staff and often sourcing of materials.
How contract manufacturing works in practice
The agreement is the product. It should state the specification and the approved sample, the materials and who buys them, acceptable defect levels and how inspection works, price and its validity, order minimums, lead times, payment terms, and who owns formulas, artwork and tools. Regulated categories also need to say who holds which documents for each market.
Contract manufacturers range from full-service plants that formulate, source and pack, to specialists that only fill or assemble. The more the factory does, the less you need to manage, and the more you depend on it. Some brands keep a second approved supplier for their key products so that a single failure does not stop sales.
Typical problems start with specifications that are not measurable, approval by photo rather than physical sample, and payment schedules that leave nothing to negotiate with after shipment. Another is quietly substituted materials once the first orders go well. Inspection before shipment and periodic retesting catch most of this. Keep records of each approval. Paying a final instalment only after an inspection report arrives gives you leverage at the point where you need it most.
Our contract manufacturing page covers the model, and cosmetics and supplements pages describe category specifics. In plush and souvenirs we use our group’s own production practice; in other categories we work with selected contract manufacturers.
