Private label supplements for the UK market

Ordinary food supplements need no prior approval in the UK. That is why the mistakes hide in the details: the address on the label, the novel food status of one ingredient, and the exact wording of a claim.

Private label supplements in the UK: what the law expects of the brand

To sell private label supplements in the UK, you register as a food business with your local authority at least 28 days before trading, label the product as a ‘food supplement’ with the mandatory statements, use only claims that appear on the Great Britain nutrition and health claims register, and confirm that no ingredient is a novel food without authorisation. According to UK government import guidance, food supplements are not subject to prior approval unless they are genetically modified or novel, and whoever imports them is legally responsible for their composition, safety and labelling.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland are two label markets. Since 1 January 2024, prepacked food sold in Great Britain must show a UK address for the food business operator, or for a UK-based importer if the operator is outside the UK. Products sold in Northern Ireland need a Northern Ireland or EU address under the Windsor Framework.

Novel foods catch trend ingredients. A food not consumed to a significant degree in the UK or the EU before 15 May 1997 needs authorisation before it can be sold in Great Britain, and checking that status is the operator’s job. The Food Standards Agency treats most CBD products this way. A supplement that claims to prevent, treat or cure a disease may be classed as a medicine, which brings in the MHRA. See our UK market guide for product safety, packaging and channel issues. Everything here is general information, and a UK-qualified food law adviser confirms it for each formula and label in a project.

Launch sequence for a UK supplement brand

Formula checks and production usually decide the date.

  1. 1

    Choose the territory

Great Britain only, or with Northern Ireland. The answer changes the label address and the applicable law.

  2. 2

    Screen the formula

Check every form, botanical and trend ingredient before design starts. Our supplements category page explains why the claim should shape the formula.

  3. 3

    Choose where to manufacture

Any origin can work if a UK operator or importer stands behind the product. We compare selected contract manufacturers in our manufacturing stage.

  4. 4

    Set up the UK business

Establish the operator or appoint an importer, then register with the local authority.

Registration at least 28 days before trading
  5. 5

    Label and claims review

Specialist review of statements, address, allergens and claims against the current register.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need approval to sell food supplements in the UK?

Not for ordinary food supplements, which UK guidance says need no prior approval unless genetically modified or novel. You must still register as a food business at least 28 days before trading and meet composition, labelling and claims rules.

Can I use my EU supplement label in the UK?

Usually not without changes. Since 1 January 2024, prepacked food sold in Great Britain needs a UK address for the operator or importer, and claims must match the Great Britain register. Northern Ireland, by contrast, needs a Northern Ireland or EU address.

Can a company outside the UK sell supplements there?

Yes, through a UK importer whose address appears on the label for Great Britain. That importer becomes legally responsible for composition, safety and labelling.

What health claims can a UK supplement make?

Only claims listed on the Great Britain register, used under their conditions. A claim to prevent, treat or cure disease is not allowed for food and may make the product a medicine.
